Trying to fix a problem with subsidies is treating the symptom rather than the cause. Giving rebates on EVs will not even touch the problems of people living below poverty level. But not to worry - I doubt if the program will really cost taxpayers anything - because I doubt if anyone will be able to take advantage of the rebates - as you said, they have to have the money (and the desire for an EV- Ha!) before they can get the rebate.

Exactly Al! As you and JF have pointed out, who in that unfortunate demographic are going to lay out precious cash for an EV. Non-starter (pun).

Washington state is also trying to ban all natural gas and wants to force people to retrofit their homes with electric heat pumps. At their own expense. Hopefully the vote against it goes through in November. For any of your readers in Washington: https://letsgowashington.com/

Seems like OR and WA via radical voter bases in Portland and Seattle are pushing for some extreme measures, like CA.

Argh

Some people may feel that the EV choice is the right one for them, but let's not force anything down our throat!

The fact that the Impoverished among us might need one is past the point of ridiculous and beyond the point of absurd.

First this is a subsidy - do they understand how that works.. first you have to have the money - then you get some back! If they already don't have a car it's because they can't afford it, even if they are given one! They won't have the money to keep it up or run it! How do you fix that problem?

I am not saying you don't need to take care of the disadvantaged, whose numbers are growing rapidly - solve that problem before you start throwing stuff at them with no plan in mind for their actual overall welfare! That way you might be serving them and not your agenda!

Love your EV articles!

clown world. best thing the EV does is catch fire and keep you warm for hours.

but even then, it eventually burns out, and I think the toxicity of the fumes may make the fire less helpful anyway

What nonsense! Most of these people don't own their own homes or have access to charging infrastructure. You would think they would do some demographic research before coming up with this stuff. Guess not.

Excellent points K.T.

Charging stations are routinely vandalized and stripped for the copper, even in the better neighborhoods, so....

The path from subsidies to government control of everything is actually quite a bit less complicated than most might think.

The only thing that can stop the shenanigans informed citizens. Sad to say we are f*ck!

This is illuminating. If WA wanted to help the impoverished, the state would provide discounts on e-bikes and scooters. Unless WA expects people to live in their EVs, which is probably part of the plan.

But ultimately, the state wants to eliminate driving altogether. It has been their quest since the 70s.
