Patagucci & North Face: Better Living Through Chemistry and Fossil Fuels
Back to Nature Virtue Signaling Meets Synthetic Organic Chemistry

As a chemist with a background in organic and inorganic chemistry I tend to look at the everyday world in terms of energy flow and where stuff actually comes from. I won’t bore the reader with technicalities, but rather share the following basics that are a reasonable way to look at things (thanks to Gibb's Free Energy theory):
A ball is pushed uphill, and thus we order things and power stuff and create materials and products. Non-spontaneous. Fossil fuels are burned and/or transformed, which may create disorder and heat, like almost all work done with energy.
A ball is at rest. Equilibrium.
A ball rolls downhill. Spontaneous, but may need a kick in the arse to get going. Typically involves a release of energy and/or heat and many times something gets oxidized and disorder is created.
So what does this have to do with sportswear companies? Patagucci and North Face? Well they claim to be sustainable and back to nature and espouse lot’s of warm and fuzzy virtue signaling, yet every product they make and sell is based on organic chemical synthesis and/or synthetic polymer chemistry. Most of the products comprise polyester, nylon, and polyurethane, all true Better Living Through Chemistry Miracle Polymers.

I tend to rank my reading by who can make me smile the most for the day - so today you get the "at a boy" award! Great article - you just have to love the hypocrisy! They just don't get it.... they are the same people who think their steak comes fro the supermarket shelf, but they shouldn't eat it - ("it's bad!) so let's have highly processed bug burgers instead. Thanks for the smile!
