For those interested in the background article regarding German Chancellor Merz's January 15, 2026 speech, I just published the following on CGNP's GreenNUKE Substack.
German Nuclear Power Phase Out a "Huge Mistake"- Chancellor Merz
“A businessman cannot force you to buy his product; if he makes a mistake, he suffers the consequences; if he fails, he takes the loss. If bureaucrat makes a mistake, you suffer the consequences; if he fails, he passes the loss on to you.” - Ayn Rand, Lexicon. The German bureaucrats have passed the consequences of this colossal screw-up to the people. “So sorry.”
The Germans, enslaved to their Green/Red/Green ideologues, shot the horse they were riding on because they believed there would be a unicorn to ride just up ahead.
When that unicorn failed to appear, they were ASTONISHED that their speed slowed to foot's pace.
I think it's hilarious that the No-Nuclear-Nuttin' wing of the ecofascists tramped all over the
CO2-is-Poison wing in their quest for incompatible ideological goals.
While it was clearly a strategic blunder for the Germans, one cannot ignore the fact that Angela Merkel, and East German communist by birth and upbringing, was Chancellor when the decision was made to accelerate the process. Was she working for Putin? Gerhard Schroeder, who was instrumental in the process left the German government to work for Russian government aligned companies as well. Will we ever know?
It was either a stupendous cock up or the intention was to make Germany so dependent on Russian gas that they would be powerless to do anything should Putin wander into any Eastern European nations.
The commenteriat say that Merkel was a wonderful Chancellor. My view of her (FWIW) is that she was a disaster for Germany and for the EU and Europe more generally.
In 1999 Gerhard Schroeder announces all nuclear will be shutdown in Germany by 2020 "replaced by wind & solar". [if you believe that I have 5 bridges to sell you, cheap]. Then just before Schroeder gets booted out of office he signs a $6B contract to build a NG pipeline from Russia to Germany with Gazprom, the Russia NG utility. Plus a $1.7B loan guaranteed by the German gov't. Then shortly after losing the election Schroeder signs on as a chairman with Gazprom & other Russian energy companies including Nordstream.
And in 2003 Schroeder quashed an investigation into a company named SPAG in Frankfurt linked to money laundering in several countries run by St. Petersburg's Tambovskaya mafia group with links to Putin, who was on SPAG's advisory board.
Apart from being a neo-communist, Merkel was also a WEF minion, one of the early ones. Further to the catastrophic decision to abandon nuclear energy (appeasement to the greens to secure votes after the Indonesian Tsunani in the early 2000s) she was also responsible for inviting half of the third World to Germany, stay there fully paid by German tax payers, completely changing the German societal structure. Certain parts of large German cities now resemble third world countries. As the German author (and former ARD foreign affairs reporter) Peter Scholl-Latour put it "if you invite half Calcutta - you become Calcutta".
I don't know where the 25% price increase comes from, which could be considered reasonable for a 15 year period. This is what Perplexity says:
"For typical German households, the average retail electricity price (all taxes and levies included) was around 25–26 euro cents per kWh in 2011 and about 38–41 euro cents per kWh in 2025." Which makes it 53% and not 25. Some difference.
Of course industrial, large volume customers pay much lower prices. The rate for these was 4 c for many years. Which climbed to over 10 c for energy-intensive industry clients and 19c for a medium volume client in 2025. That's over 100% for the first group.
Merkel clearly a total catastrophe, following her masters order to destroy the country as effectively as possible. Merz, a Blackrock, agent not much better drawing the country into a war with Russia, to fight the US proxy war. And this after Napoleon and the postcard painter both had their teeth knocked in there, and 20 million Germans killed the last time (12 of them after the WW2 peace treaty was signed)
Renewables don't add anything because they only work, at random, about 1/4 the time. So other generators — gas, coal, nuclear — need to be kept in service. Yeah, their overall fuel cost is reduced but per kWh it's increased because the plants have to run inefficiently because mandating renewable priority drives their capacity factors down to the complement of renewables' capacity factors. If wind provides 25% then gas and coal and nuclear provide 75% on average, but their peak capacity has to be enough to cover the entire load. Capital and staff costs are increased.
Details in my book "Where Will We Get Our Energy? A Comprehensive Quantitative System Engineering Study of the Relationship between Climate, Science, and Technology." Everything quantified. No vague handwaving. 350 bibliographic citations allow readers to verify I didn't simply make up stuff.
And that caused Spain's big grid failure last year. Coincidentally another big infrastructure failure yesterday, with a massive train crash on a flat, straight section of rail, killing at least 39 people. Spain being a Globalist Neoliberal paradise that can't afford basic infrastructure maintenance because their Green Agenda policies have nearly bankrupted them. At the same time the big Green Agenda promoters are now meeting in Davos.
Probably made by fermenting the corpses of some of the million young men they've killed in their Ukrainian proxy war with Russia. I'm sure they will be touting expanding their war at the WEF circle jerk.
When you divide the energy produced over the economic life of wind & solar by the energy required to produce, install and service panels, turbines, batteries and electronics you end up with a fairly low number (maybe 2). One author equated this with what the Roman’s achieved using oxen & slaves. Currently much of the energy required to support renewables comes from fossil fuels, in an all renewable scenario much of the energy produced would be consumed supporting the renewable infrastructure. And the electronics contribution cannot be ignored, each advancement in solid state electronics is achieved through lowering the devices entropy - increased materials purity, increased control over geometry all of which requires ever higher energy inputs.
Details in my book "Where Will We Get Our Energy? A Comprehensive Quantitative System Engineering Study of the Relationship between Climate, Science, and Technology." Everything quantified. No vague handwaving. 350 bibliographic citations allow readers to verify I didn't simply make up stuff.
they wake up to a cold, cold morning. too late now. it takes time to build new ones and the 'alternatives' cannot make enough electricity. I think Germany forbids to cut wood for burning, the north of Belgium is not allowed - my family lives there, whereas the south is encouraged to do so.
I am now in the US for 23 years, but grew up in Belgium and all my family is still there, so I watch both sides of the ocean LOL. I also got a few friends in Germany but lost contact with them years ago.
It’s encouraging Germany is rethinking its climate blunders but in the UK, they are completely doubling down on the climate scam. Of course, it’s all by design as no one but the brainwashed actually believe in climate change and green energy.
"Integrating nuclear with renewables could create a resilient system. Germany’s push for hydrogen and offshore wind is promising, but without baseload support, volatility persists."
Integrating any weather dependent form of electricity production with nuclear or fossil production would be another mistake. Wind is not reliable so some form of backup must be available when the wind stops because the demand does not stop. That means that for every windmill, an equivalent backup must also be built. One system for the price of two or three considering all the add ons that wind requires. The lowest practical CO2 grid would be nuclear plus natural gas as needed for extremes The grid could even be all nuclear if fast-responding nuclear plants were built, as used in ships. Of course, even an all-nuclear grid would do nothing to replace the need for oil and gas as industrial ingredients.
But an all-nuclear grid would free up most of the oil & gas for our petrochemical needs. So we don't run out or face debilitating prices in the 10-30yrs before the major supply crunch hits.
Yes. Look at the example of the United Arab Emirates recently completing a four-reactor complex at al-Barakah. They have plenty of oil. They recognize the value of nuclear power.
he realities of intermittency, lack of storage and cost have always been there, oblivious to ideological spin and political ignorance. And the activists who championed this disaster ride off on their bicycles unscathed. To what degree were the activists underwritten by Putin?
Someone called them “useful idiots” I believe. Meanwhile anyone daring to mention that the renewable king was lacking clothing was censored / ostracized.
As a California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) intervenor protesting the plans to needlessly shut down Diablo Canyon Power Plant, I was able to deliver a brief speech at CPUC headquarters a few years ago. I noted the emperor had no clothes. Stating the obvious was not appreciated by the Commissioners.
We lived near Diablo Canyon up until 2015, saw the endless protests (Abalone alliance, mothers against something) and litigation. Protesting nuclear seemed to be a cottage industry. They got San Onofre (aided by a massive engineering screwup by Mitsubishi), nearly got Diablo Canyon.
Thank you. These anti-nuclear power groups were able to get millions of dollars in CPUC intervenor compensation in apparent exchange for their opposition to Diablo Canyon. On the other hand, CPUC intervenor and Diablo Canyon advocate Californians for Green Nuclear Power has not received a penny from the CPUC since late 2018. Excellent article - The self-destructive nature of the left is unsurpassed. The biggest problem is that they insist that everyone else climb onboard their suicidal mission.
Spain is Germany's competitor in the EU for the Ecofascism of the Year Award. And was the direct cause of its disastrous grid failure last year.
ESG & Stakeholder Capitalism, embraced 100% by the Spain left wing gov't is a giant wealth transfer scam which causes infrastructure destruction, leaks BlackRock whistleblower:
Why the ESG Revolution Was Never About Saving the Planet | Desiree Fixler, Winston Marshall Clips:
"Former BlackRock ESG executive and whistleblower Desiree Fixler joins The Winston Marshall Show to explain how stakeholder capitalism and ESG became a multi-trillion-dollar system that enriches elites while raising costs for ordinary people. Drawing on her experience inside BlackRock, the World Economic Forum, and regulatory advisory boards, she describes the scale of greenwashing and the incentives driving it. The conversation covers ESG underperformance, net zero policy failures, and how these agendas blur the lines between capitalism, politics, and state control."
Neoliberal Globalist cheerleader Spain, has another big infrastructure failure. Two passenger trains collide on a flat straight section of rail, while travelling below normal speed. At least 39 dead, hundreds seriously injured. Coincidentally just as WEF stakeholder capitalism promoters & infrastructure destruction specialists meeting begins. Providence?
You got a lot of slimy politicians, like Mertz, who make speeches pretending they're different and are going exit the Green Agenda, but where the rubber-meets-the-road you see nothing but platitudes. Reminds one of Carney in Canada.
In 1999 Germany was 31% clean, zero emissions Nuclear electricity, 170TWh/yr. At that time they started their program to replace Nuclear with Wind & Solar, buffered with Russian gas. Now after having spent over $500B on wind and solar since then they are now at 28.8% wind + solar, 165TWh/yr. Zero achievement after $500B down the sewer. If Germany has spent $230B on Nuclear power they would now be 100% clean Nuclear electricity. 3X the results at <1/2 the cost. And now most of Germany's wind & solar will have to be replaced over the next decade. And of course they would now be much more resilient to Putin's natural gas pipeline blackmail.
All good points. I'm preparing a post for the GreenNUKE substack at https://greennuke.substack.com/ that will be exploring this information. A broad web search of several relevant terms in German yields no reporting regarding Merz's speech. :-(
Now for more clear directions from the German government: reverse net zero, rearm, support Israel and drop Palestine statehood. Let’s partner to defend the West and Europe from Russia, China, and Islam.
Yet the same “experts,” er, clowns, that shut down the nuclear power plants are advocating for “a hybrid approach: bolstering renewables while reconsidering nuclear.” Obviously, they’ll never learn.

exactly my point
Germany is a textbook example of "The Best Government Money Can Buy!" German citizens are paying a huge price for this criminal conduct.

John, good distillation !
The 25 % is from the nuclear shutdown side alone, aside from the other boondoggles.

Interesting! I understand that they are burning plenty of imported wood pellets and lignite in Germany to stay warm - lots of carbon up in smoke.
They have to stay warm some way or another. I heard last week was very cold. Ah that smoke is for the environment isn't it? LOL
